Retirement Bonuses Explained: What a “Pension Bonus” From Your Super Fund Actually Means

by Sep 3, 2026Superannuation

If you’re getting close to retirement, you may have seen headlines about super funds paying a “pension bonus” or “retirement bonus” when members move into the pension phase. Colonial First State (CFS) is the latest to introduce one, with its Pension Bonus starting 10 August 2026. Here’s what this money actually is, where it comes from, and whether it should change how you plan your retirement.

It’s Not a Gift — It’s a Returned Tax Reserve

A retirement bonus isn’t extra money your fund is giving you out of goodwill. It’s a refund of tax your fund had already set aside on your behalf.

While your super sits in an accumulation account, your fund pays capital gains tax on investment growth and holds money in reserve to cover it. Once you move into a retirement-phase pension account, investment earnings become tax-free, so that reserve is no longer needed. Some funds pass part of it back to you as a one-off credit to your new pension account.

Different funds use different names for the same basic idea — “ ” “pension bonus,” “balance booster,” and “retirement reward” all describe versions of it.

The CFS Pension Bonus, Specifically

From 10 August 2026, CFS pays a Pension Bonus to members who transfer, like-for-like, from a FirstChoice Wholesale Personal Super, FirstChoice Employer Super, or FirstChoice Wholesale Pre-Retirement Pension into a FirstChoice Wholesale Pension. Here’s what applies:

  • Launch rate: 0.80% of your eligible transferred balance, credited directly into your new pension account (not paid as cash).
  • Eligibility: the account you’re transferring from must have been open for at least 90 days, and you must not have received a CFS Pension Bonus before — it’s a once-in-a-lifetime payment.
  • Cap: your eligible balance for the bonus calculation is limited to the general transfer balance cap, $2.1 million from 1 July 2026.
  • Not guaranteed: the trustee sets the rate and can change it — or reduce it to zero — at any time.

Not Every Fund Pays One

This isn’t universal. Industry estimates suggest only around one in three super funds pay a retirement bonus of any kind. Aware Super and Vision Super (currently 0.5%) are two others that do, each with their own rules and calculation method, usually set out in the fund’s Product Disclosure Statement.

Some funds attach conditions after payment, too. Aware Super, for example, can claw back the bonus if you withdraw 50% or more of your pension balance within 12 months of opening the account.

Three Things Worth Knowing Before You Rely On One

  1. It’s separate from the Age Pension. A super fund retirement bonus has nothing to do with Centrelink’s Age Pension or any government payment — it’s purely an internal fund mechanism.
  2. It doesn’t count toward contribution caps, but it does count toward your transfer balance cap. Because it isn’t a contribution, a bonus won’t eat into your concessional or non-concessional caps. But the transferred amount plus the bonus does count toward your personal transfer balance cap — if you’re already close to it, a bonus could tip you over.
  3. Timing and structure still matter most. Rates can move or drop to zero, and rules vary between funds, so a bonus shouldn’t be the deciding factor in when or how you start a pension. It’s a welcome extra, not a reason to rush a decision that shapes your long-term retirement income.

The Bottom Line

A retirement bonus can be a genuinely useful lift when you move into the pension phase — CFS’s 0.80% is a real, immediate credit for eligible members from August 2026. But it’s one piece of a bigger retirement picture that also includes your transfer balance cap, investment strategy, and Age Pension eligibility.
